MORE PICS (Manteo, NC, January 2007)

OBFG HAPPENINGS . . .

Though updates here have not been regular (bad blogger!!!), the Outer Banks Fiber Guild has been quite active, and has a full year of activities planned for 2007.

Last November, a "fiber retreat" was held at an oceanfront home in Nags Head, NC. Eight ladies, from near and afar, gathered in the fantasy McMansion home, complete with a number of looms, to share a week of weaving, enjoying the Outer Banks, and socializing. The house was abuzz every day and night with weaving in the main living room, spinning on the beachfront deck, bookmaking and felting in the rec room, cooking up gourmet meals in the dream kitchen, and watching movies in the home cinema. What a great time everyone had!!

December was a time to sharing the true gifts of guild members. Scarves that were either knitted or woven were exhanged amongst the members present. What better than having a handcrafted fiber gift from a fellow guild member? Each of the scarves will be treasured by the recipients.

2007 was kicked off by a spinning workshop using a drop spindle. One member, Doug Brannon, who has combined his interest in fiber arts and woodworking, handcrafted low whorl drop spindles and gave one to each member attending the January workshop to learn the skill of drop spindle spinning. Inger Seitz and KaeLi Spiers provided excellent instruction and had everyone spinning yarn (in one form or another) in no time. The Springlike day allowed the workshop to be held on the deck in front of the fiber shop of Fine Yarns at Kimbeeba (Manteo, NC; owned by guild member Sybil Ross . . a big thank you, Sybil, for hosting the guild meeting at the shop). Everyone went home excited with a spindle and handspun yarn!

February was a time to learn about felting . . both needle felting and wet felting. It never ceases to amaze everyone how many different ways fiber can be used in various art forms.
